Burn's Supper

Tonight, Trudy and I had the honor of attending a Burn's Supper, held by Trudy's boss Mike at the Coffee Denn. The Burn's Supper has been held annually since 1801, to celebrate the life of Scots poet Robert Burns.

The format of the dinner was interesting. The evening began with a short lecture on Burn's life, followed by a short poetry reading. Then we had a lovely soup starter, and a delicious salmon course. Then the piper began to play, with the chef bringing the Haggis out to the main table. The MC then read Burn's Address to a Haggis.

To be honest, neither Trudy or I were too sure about Haggis. It ended up being really really tasty though. I am not sure how authentic it was, but I enjoyed it.

After the haggis, there were more readings from Burn's works, especially centered on women. Burns was a notorious womanizer, and its not been until recent times that women were allowed to dine at the Supper. A few *gems* of his work, concerning the ladies, were read and then the women were giving the stage to retort. This was pretty funny, and was done is a sort of Friar's Roast style. The evening closed with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne", which Burns wrote several verses of.

I'm really glad we got to attend the dinner. I got to learn a little, and broaden my cultural and gastronomic horizons.

iSync woes

grumble

Since the .Mac service started, I have been a fairly happy subscriber. The services provided work reasonably well and I haven't had too many issues so far.

*Except* for iSync. For a long, long while, this worked as expected as well. Until a few months ago. Now, no matter what I do, I can't seem to get my PowerBook to sync with .Mac.

When I first noticed that things were not working as expected, I posted to the .Mac support forums. I explained my problem(s) in detail, and even included excerpts of the relevant log files. I got several responses from other users with the same problem. But I never got a response from anyone at Apple.

So, if anyone can help or has advice on this, I am all ears. Just for fun, the error that I get when I attempt to sync is below.

01:08:23 Error Can't get sync mode for provider .Mac, data class bookmarks

Phish's Last Show

I am not sure who exactly put this together, but its a great QuickTime photo-montage of Phish's last show. I am not the biggest fan of their music anymore, but I did enjoy seeing them live. When we lived in S.F., Trudy, Jordan, and I got to see the 'final' two shows they played in Mountain View, before they took a brief hiatus.

Sleep deprivation. A Mixed Bag.

Good:

I hooked up with Chris Walters today, and we went to the Tiger Tech Talk that Apple hosted in Stockley Park. The event itself was pretty well done; interesting content in the presentations, and good demos. Unfortunately, like WWDC, everything presented today is covered by the NDA. If you didn't make it to WWDC, and space is still available, I recommend signing up for the event.

Bad:

Apple Stock plummeted today. :(

Sleep deprived. Whenever I hang out with Chris, an all night drinks-fest seems to happen. 2 hours sleep is not enough.

Ugly:

Driving back from London to Swansea today, I did not see the Sun. Dreary.
