Knowledge Management... 2003/9

Corporate memory - the hard way

Here is a good pointer to an analysis of why knowledge management efforts go awry. The point that caught my attention was that so often these projects are executive driven, not bottom up driven so they don't really help the bottom line people get their jobs done. They don't become integrated into the social fabric of the organization and thus don't get used. Knowledge Management should be something that helps a knowledge worker get their job done.

Self-explanatory syndication

Thanks to Sebs Open Research for pointing out this great reference to an article at wired that summarizes what the RSS / syndication / aggregator thing is all about. Read that article here.

KM Tools and solutions

Here is a good summary of Knowledge Management categories. Also, check out the paper as well by Etienne Wenger here. Good stuff. An excellent summary of all the KM solutions that are available.

Presentation on weblogs in the organization from Michael Angeles of Lucent

Excellent summary and pointer to a presentation on using weblogs in the business organization. Also a slightly older article, but worth a read.

Web journals could have business value.

Here is an older article by John Foley at InformationWeek (July 22, 2002) that takes a quick look at how blogging might be useful for corporations. I still haven't found anyone who is talking about using blogging within a highly distributed company organization, like a field engineering/consulting organization, but I am still looking ;-).
