An HP Color Copier 290 is just a copier

It may look like a scanner, it may look like a printer, it may even have a USB port, but an HP Color Copier 290 is just too proud to be a multi-function (less fax) computer peripheral.

So I've donated $15 to a catholic thrift store and snagged a gummed up black cartridge from a recycle bin to get past the "Please insert a black cartridge message."  Result: "Please insert a color cartridge."  This is one proud beast.  So just $30 later I have a new (but recycled) color cartridge.

WhoHoo! It works!  Copied some of Tam's poetry, kid art and fun scanner/copier "art" of handprints and also a flower with wedding rings.

Why is the paper catching every 3 scans? Because it is my curse. I have yet to try it with different (not old) paper. The jamming is solved by by simply ejecting the paper and trying again so at least one doesn't have to open it up.

$50 "invested." $125 would purchase a new printer/scanner/copier that does (and probably must) talk to my PC.

Guess I got the gizmo to copy my tax forms.  Did I mention we're filing electronically for the first time this year?

O yeah, it's also as big as a 19" monitor.  It does have a nifty feature on the power plug. There's an embedded LED in the copier end of the power cord telling me when the transformer's plugged in and sucking power. Good thing: 24V 1W power supply. Same size as needed for my tiny HP ThinkJet also purchased on the cheap and collecting dust.

Professional Journaling

Over the last week or so I got a reprieve from my current project to work with an older project. I made a disappointing mistake: I dropped the journaling I've kept up for the last few months.  I quickly learned that this has value when I was preparing a summary and habitually went to the view and the lines that usually align & connect my scatter-plot of a week we're just not there.

This was completely reinforced when I learned of some great articles by Johanna Rothman, and the weblog, especially the weblog entry "Start a Journal."  During reading I found myself mentally nodding a "I've seen that behavior" followed by "I bet she was able to glean these from her Journal."

A college professor of mine, Bill Wilson*, also promoted Journaling. I've finally gotten around to it 5 years after graduating.  Perhaps I would have sooner if the wiki bug had bitten earlier.  *No page at my college's website. That's a tough one to Google for.
